Description
Bacteriology Laboratory
Corequisites: MLS 470.

This course focuses on applying bacteriology concepts through hands-on laboratory work in a student microbiology laboratory. Students connect theoretical knowledge to practice by cultivating organisms, interpreting laboratory results, and evaluating organism significance within diagnostic workflows. Emphasis is placed on linking laboratory findings to clinical context, troubleshooting results, and supporting clinical decision-making. This course prepares students for a clinical practicum in Microbiology.

Outcomes: Apply bacteriology concepts through hands-on laboratory practice to evaluate clinically relevant microorganisms from human specimens; Differentiate pathogens from normal or commensal flora by interpreting laboratory findings; Analyze and troubleshoot microbiology testing outcomes through evaluation of laboratory data, organism characteristics, diagnostic methods, workflow, and potential sources of error; Integrate laboratory findings with clinical features to support diagnostic reasoning while adhering to laboratory safety guidelines, including standard precautions and appropriate PPE use.
