Global Maternal and Child Health

Prerequisites: MPBH 414 and MPBH 403.

This course prepares the student to gain substantive knowledge of the key issues in global maternal and child health. With a focus on low-and-middle income countries (LMICs), the course will provide the student an opportunity to delve into critical issues faced by women and children, assess health disparities, and examine social justice issues in LMICs. In addition, the student will be expected to think critically about existing programs, research, and policy involving maternal and child health.

Outcomes: Identify specific risk factors for poor outcomes in reproductive health; Discuss contemporary issues surrounding maternal and child health; Apply methods of program evaluation to health programming for women and children in an international setting; Analyze major causes and trends of morbidity and mortality among women and children in LMICs; Explain the social, political and economic determinants of maternal and child health and how they contribute to population health and health inequities; Explain how globalization affects global burdens of disease among women and children.
