Health Care Regulation and Policy
Prerequisites: Prerequisites for Health Law MJ students: LAW 900, 901, and 902. Health Law MJ students should take LAW 904 in conjunction with LAW 903.

This course looks at patient representation issues in the context of judicial advocacy and public policy formation and explores patient rights in the context of federal opinions and strategies they utilize. The role of government in health care is explored through a review of major government health programs, particularly Medicare and Medicaid, with a focus on the fundamentals of legislative and administrative processes in health policy development and implementation. Issues to be explored will be drawn from the wide array of health matters in which governments are involved.

Outcomes: Describe the three separate branches of government and the role each plays in the policymaking process; Identify five specific reasons achieving meaningful health care reform is so difficult in the United States; Research a health policy issue that negatively impacts citizens of the US or of the state where you live; Advocate for necessary policy change by providing a balanced analysis of available and best options for advancing a specific health policy option.
