Language in Popular Culture
This course presents a critical approach to understanding language and linguistic innovation in popular culture, including entertainment and news media, digital communication, and political discourse.
Prerequisites: ANTH 100 or ANTH 102 or ANTH 208.
Outcomes: Students will 1) identify linguistic patterns and language ideologies in mass media and digital discourse, 2) critically assess linguistic evaluations and (mis)representations of social groups, 3) apply linguistic anthropological insights to their own experiences with language in pop culture.
