Renaissance
This course examines the political and cultural life of Italy's five principal city-states (Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and Naples) from the era of St. Francis and Dante until the sack of Rome in 1527.

Outcomes: Students gain appreciation for the debate about a rebirth of ancient culture in the city-states of Italy; They acquire special cognizance of humanism as a historical phenomenon and the influence of humanism on education, politics, the visual arts and religion.
