Contemporary Literature
This course concentrates on literature and literary movements of the second half of the twentieth century. Possible topics include postcolonialism (Achebe, Jhabvala, Naipaul, Soyinka, Walcott), postmodernism (Acker, Calvino, Pynchon, Reed), and African-American writing (Baldwin, Morrison, Walker).
Outcomes: Students will gain an understanding of the diversity of forms, politics, themes, and identities in contemporary literature and the scholarly criticism about it; Students will learn how to teach and write about this literature through oral and written assignments.
