Human Origins
Requirement: ENVS 101 or ENVS 137 for students admitted to Loyola University for Fall 2012 or later. No requirement for students admitted to Loyola prior to Fall 2012 or those with a declared major or minor in the Department of Anthropology, Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry, Department of Environmental Science, Department of Physics, Bioinformatics, Forensic Science or Neuroscience.

This course focuses on the biocultural evolution of our species, Homo sapiens. It addresses the basic human desire for self-understanding. We explore what it means to be human through the use of genetics, non-human primates, and the fossil record. Each section of the course contributes to an overall understanding of human origins and the process of evolution.

Outcomes: By the end of the semester students will have a better understanding of human nature, our relationship to the world around us, and our interactions with each other.
