Independent studies generally consist of research, activities, and papers. Dependent on a student's needs, the course can be either 1, 2 or 3 credit hours and the requirements are adjusted accordingly. Students need to find a full-time faculty member willing to teach this course, obtain approval from the faculty member, as well as the Program Director to register for this course.

Restricted to Graduate Social Work students.

This course will examine the intersections of race, class, and gender. Students embark on a field study to the U.S.¿Mexico border region. This immersive experience is designed to critically engage with the complex realities of migration, border enforcement, and transnational identity. Through site visits, community dialogues, and engagement with local organizations, students explore how structural inequalities shape the lived experiences of migrants. The trip provides firsthand insight into the socio-political dynamics of the border, including the impact of immigration policy, labor exploitation, and racialized narratives surrounding migration. By integrating classroom theory with on-the-ground observation, the experience will deepen students¿ understanding of how race, class, and gender intersect in shaping migration patterns and borderland communities. The trip also encourages reflection on ethical research practices and the role of academia in advocating for social justice. Please know there will be 2 predeparture sessions. The trip will be March 1st-7th. There will be a post immersion session approximately 2 weeks after the trip.
