Class Notes
In this course we will examine heroes, heroines, and heroism, considering Classical models and their later, reimagined counterparts in Mexican and Mexican-American literature. We will begin with Homer's foundational Iliad, before turning to Mexican-American authors who subvert archetypes, presenting us with a new type of hero (often a woman). Discussion will center on the different cultures and identities represented in each work and the traditions behind them. Other readings include selected Greek tragedies, the songs of Sappho, and the poetry of Sor Juana.
