Class Notes
This course explores the changing relationship between queerness and the state, with an emphasis on American and Chicago Politics. Students will learn how the conception of queerness has transitioned from a set of behaviors with eh state must combat, to a type of person from which the state must protect the public, to a type of person who the state must protect from themselves, to a politically powerful group with influence over state policy. This course uses American and Chicago politics as case studies of this process, drawing on research from multiple disciplines. Students will learn to challenge popular narratives of queer politics and will develop an original research proposal drawing data from Chicago politics.
