Description
This course will focus on major European films in order to give students an overview of the film production of representative European filmmakers studied in the historical and societal context.

Outcomes: Students will gain an understanding of the distinctive aspects of the major European movements such as Italian neorealism, French new wave, New German Cinema and old and new Spanish surrealism.

This is a writing intensive class. A grade of C- or better in UCWR 110 is required to enroll. This course examines The Decalogue (Dekalog), the legendary ten-episode series directed by the Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski.  Inspired by the spirituality of the Ten Commandments, these modern-day stories explore the moral dilemmas that ordinary people experience while dealing with a variety of difficult situations in their lives.  Class sessions will include film screenings and discussions of the relevant themes.
