The course provides an introduction to human rights-oriented peace-building via social work practice in an international context, focusing on anti-oppressive practices around the world that use participatory and human rights-based approaches. Problems addressed include trauma treatment, environmental justice, preventing terrorism and genocide, global health, and advocating for human rights of persons with disabilities. The class occurs via Zoom video-conferencing in partnership with a classroom of students from around the world in Eastern Europe, making it possible for students to develop cross-cultural awareness, carry out projects together, and learn about other countries through personal dialogue.
In this course, instructional time is met with a combination of synchronous time and asynchronous activities. The length of the synchronous time will be determined by the course instructor and scheduled within the scheduled course time range listed for the course in LOCUS. The length of the synchronous class may vary from course to course.
