Description
Prerequisites: THEO 100, THEO 107, or equivalent; please check requirements for declared majors/minors for exceptions.

This course will study the role of women in at least one (if not more) of the major world religious traditions.

Outcomes: Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the influence of religion on gender roles, and how women in the contemporary world are reinterpreting their religious traditions.

The primary questions that this ansynchronous course will address include: how does religion function to shape ideas about gender, and gendered practices, concepts, laws and policies? Conversely, how does gender shape religion and theology? This course will explore religion and gender and in conversation with sacred texts, theology, and ethics, with a focus on the intersection of feminist theory and theology. We will pay close attention to ways in which certain voices have been oppressed or made dominant throughout the tradition. Throughout the course, we will discuss the major contributions to the study of women and religion especially issues of sexuality, gender roles, embodiment, intimacy, race, and class.
