Tier 2 Literary Knowledge
European Studies
Global Studies
This course explores what literature is and what it does, drawing upon classics and bestsellers in modern German-language literature read in translation. This will enable us to analyze and discuss what has motivated German, Austrian and German-Swiss writers to pick up on certain themes and contribute to the cultural discourse of their countries and beyond. A highlight of the course will include a visit to the Chicago International Film Festival to view a German-language film (subtitled in English). Through the analysis of these works of literature (and film), students will gain new perspectives with which to see their own (American) culture in a different light.
