Special topics or new approaches of current interest to the instructor. This course may be used to fulfill the history major distribution requirement in 300-Level Post-1700 European History or may count as a 300-Level history elective. Students may repeat the course for credit when the topic changes.
Outcomes: Students will gain familiarity with the topic; the ability to make connections between secondary and primary sources; and the capacity to think critically about the ways that historians have approached major issues.

This course explores the lives and works of famed composers within the socio-political and cultural transformations of the 18th century. By examining pivotal musical figures within their historical contexts, students will gain understanding of how music both shaped and responded to significant intellectual and cultural shifts in early modern Europe.
Students will study composers like Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven; address their works¿ cultural and political contexts; explore transitions from Baroque to Enlightenment and the rise of Romanticism.
