Description
This course focuses on exploration of qualitative research approaches including grounded theory, ethnography, phenomenology, narrative, case study, and pragmatic approaches such as qualitative description. Discussion will include a focus on epistemology, ontology, methods, strategies, data collection, analysis, and dissemination of results. Ethical and special concerns of qualitative research are emphasized.

Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1) Explain the significance of qualitative research methods for the development of nursing and interdisciplinary science; 2) Explain the relationship between theoretical and philosophical foundations and assumptions of qualitative research methods; 3) Compare qualitative research designs including background, purpose, research; 4) Develop basic skills in qualitative data collection and analysis; 5) Analyze ethical issues related to qualitative research and the protection of human subjects.

Prerequisite: GNUR 440 & GNUR 500 (B- or higher) & Graduate Nursing
