Prerequisites: THEO 100, THEO 107, or equivalent; please check requirements for declared majors/minors for exceptions.

This course provides an introduction to Hinduism.

Outcomes: Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the most important Hindu scriptures, the general outline of the historical evolution of Hinduism, the key Hindu concepts, terms, values, and religious practices, and the basic narratives and imagery of Hinduism.

Synchronous Class Meeting: Instruction will be delivered online synchronously following the days/times indicated on the schedule. This course introduces various dimensions of Hinduism. Materials covered will include a broad range of topics, such as Hindu concepts of the person, yoga and meditation traditions, social structures, forms of ritual, philosophical and mystical impulses, myths and images associated with the major gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon, devotionalism, and sectarian divisions. We will trace the historical evolution of various branches of Hinduism, and we will be attentive to the religious and spiritual lives of both men and women, and of both high-caste and low-caste Hindus.
