Description
This course is a study of the rise of American Literature of this period. Authors may include Whitman, Dickinson, Twain, James, and Dreiser.

Outcomes: Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the distinctive historical conditions that inform American literature of this period, and will be able to identify and discuss some of its ideological and generic characteristics.
Enrollment Requirements
Pre-requisites: UCWR 110 and one 200-level English course.
Class Notes
This course examines fiction by selected U.S. writers from the Civil War to the First World War, paying particular attention to theories of Realism, to associated Regional forms, to literary Naturalism, and the contribution of literary works to emerging notions of ¿the modern.¿ Readings will include works by Henry James, Mark Twain, Kate Chopin, Edith Wharton, Theodore Dreiser, James Weldon Johnson, and Willa Cather.
