Course Description: Karl Rahner, SJ was always first and foremost a Jesuit and a pastoral theologian. While he was definitely one of the most influential Catholic theologians of the 20th century, the pastoral implications of theology and his own personal spirituality were always the driving forces behind his theology. Over the course of the semester, we will be exploring his major work in systematic theology, Foundations of Christian Faith, but we will also use articles from his volumes of Theological Investigations to consider some of his major theological themes, such as his understanding of Trinity, grace, and Christology, and to come to a deeper understanding of how these themes play out in spirituality and pastoral theology.
Outcomes:
1. Understand the core concepts of Rahner¿s theological framework¿particularly the human person, God, grace, Spirit, Christ, and Church/Sacrament¿within the context of Catholic tradition, and recognize both its grounding in that tradition and its innovative contributions.
2. Analyze Rahner¿s theological work in relation to historical, pastoral, and spiritual contexts, including an understanding of key critiques and the responses to those critiques.
3. Integrate insights from Rahner¿s theology into one¿s own theological framework and articulate its implications for addressing contemporary pastoral issues in accessible language, even for those without a theological background.
