Course Description:
This course examines the intersection of nuclear policy and Catholic Social Teaching in the context of contemporary global challenges. Pope Francis has issued a dual challenge, condemning the possession of nuclear weapons while acknowledging a role for nuclear power in addressing environmental concerns. Both weapons production and energy generation share common raw materials and waste management issues, creating a complex policy landscape. This course prepares students to become informed and passionate advocates for humane nuclear policies. Students will learn to translate and synthesize Catholic Social Teaching with well-researched energy policy positions into effective public communications, including press releases, op-eds, letters to representatives, position papers, and parish and diocesan communications.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Evaluate the principles of Catholic Social Teaching as they relate to nuclear policy, demonstrating the ability to articulate a coherent stance on nuclear weapons and energy production.
2. Analyze the complex relationship between nuclear disarmament and environmental policy, and synthesize this understanding into clear and compelling public advocacy materials.
3. Develop effective public communication strategies that convey informed positions on nuclear policy, enabling students to create materials tailored for various audiences, including policymakers and community members.
