Students' externship experience is the signature pedagogy of the social work profession. This course is designed to enhance the integration of core components of social work knowledge (e.g., social-work informed developmental theory and practice theory) with students¿ practical experience in their externships in a public school setting.
The goal of the externship program is to provide an integrative experience that brings classroom theory to the field of practice. The externship program will challenge the student to integrate professional values and personal perspectives to enhance their understanding of the true meaning of social work. Students that are in the Post-MSW PEL preparation program participate in an academic year of externship in a public school setting. In accordance with the CSWE (Council on Social Work Education) accreditation standards, students take courses that focus on understanding professional purpose, values, and ethical implications of social work practice; developing knowledge of the multiple frames of reference that reflect the organization and diversity of the profession; developing specialist advanced-level skill in the practice of social work with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities; and fostering an appreciation of the role of research for evaluating practice, programs, and service delivery, while obtaining practical experience in the school setting.
