This course seeks to introduce students to the sources, methods, and tenants of Christian Theology. Organized around a number of `big¿ questions, this course will begin by exploring the purpose of studying theology (why do theology?), move to addressing some of the foundational teachings themselves (what counts as `Christian¿ and what sources we use to get there), culminating in the practice of going from sources to doctrine (how is theology `done¿?). Once students have a feel for the why, what, and how of theological thinking, we will take on some of the most pressing questions of human existence (creation and the human condition, the problem of evil, the meaning of salvation, among others), through a variety of Christian theological perspectives both historical and modern (Biblical, classical/medieval, mystical, feminist, liberation, queer, etc). In our search to find answers to our `big¿ questions, we will also explore what it might mean to apply the teachings of Christian theology to real life situations and issues in contemporary culture. In doing so, we will utilize non-traditional sources of theological reflection including art, literature, and other media. This course satisfies the Tier I CORE requirement and has no prerequisites.
