Theology is the study of God and all things in relation to God. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a critical introduction to the Christian theological tradition through careful attention to the foundational texts, beliefs, and practices of Christianity. We will examine how Christian theology has been shaped historically by the scriptures, overwhelmingly the products of early Jews, as well as by the efforts of later Christians in successive historical periods to interpret, live out, and rearticulate those sacred texts (particular attention is given to issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, and justice), understood as God¿s revelation to human beings. The course is organized thematically and chronologically, is designed to provide students with an historically grounded introduction to Christian theology, and it will enable students to think deeply and critically about the social, political, and religious relevance of Christian theology today. The course has no prerequisites.
