The Bible and its Contemporary Interpretations
Theology is the study of God and all things in relation to God. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the Christian theological tradition. The course examines key texts and concepts in the Bible as well as how the Biblical tradition is interpreted by later Christians, particularly in post-enlightenment contemporary Christianity (with respect to the latter particular attention is given to issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, and science). The course is organized topically: each topic begins with an examination of the biblical roots of the topic studied in the context of the ancient early Jewish and Christian authors and communities that produced the relevant biblical texts, and from there proceeds to examine the ways in which later Christians of various denominations, historical periods, socio-cultural contexts, and geographic locations interpreted those biblical texts. The course is designed to provide students with an historically grounded introduction to Christian theology, and it will enable students to think deeply and critically about the social, political, and religious relevance of Christian theology today. The course has no prerequisites.
